Prieto Academy Teachers Respond to CPS March 25 Furlough Day
Teachers may be furloughed, but learning is not!
Chicago, Illinois: On March 3rd Forrest Claypool, CEO of Chicago Public Schools announced that CPS schools will be affected by three furlough days this school year. This decision comes in light of the district’s financial crisis and ongoing negotiations with Chicago Teachers Union for a fair contract. The first furlough day is scheduled for March 25, just 22 days after the announcement date. This unilateral decision by Mayor Emanuel’s appointed Board of Education has direct impact on our students’ learning. This decision fails to understand the deep commitment that teachers and parents make together to their students and children.
We the parents and teachers at Jorge Prieto Math and Science Academy are committed to our children’s learning beyond the permission of a system and demand that student-centered decisions be made rather than decisions made on the basis of the ledger’s bottom line.
Despite the furlough, the 7th grade students at Dr. Jorge Prieto Math and Science Academy, with the support of parents, teachers, and administrators, will be attending their planned field trip to the Illinois Holocaust museum on March 25th, 2016 to continue their learning about being upstanders in the face of injustice. 7th grade reading teacher, Daniel Gray asserts “What message are you sending to students if you tell them that they cannot come to school to learn that day? As teachers, we categorically disagree with the appointed Board’s economic decisions.” Quetzalli Castro, a student-teacher and a former CPS student herself says, “Our students will be attending this field trip and will be ambassadors for CPS, representing the fact that our students are talented and hungry to learn.”
Roxana Gonzalez, the 7th grade social studies teacher at Prieto, believes that teachers should be compensated for their work, but also recognizes that teachers cannot allow a system to dictate how and when learning can happen. “Learning will continue as planned, and we, the teachers, will continue to demand an equitable, student-centered contract that respects teachers as professionals. Teachers’ rights are students’ rights.”
About Dr. Jorge Prieto Math and Science Academy: Dr. Jorge Prieto Math and Science is located in the Belmont Cragin Community of Chicago. The school has implemented Lesson Study as our professional development using Math International, and follows a Balanced Literacy Approach and FOSS/STC and SEPUP Science curriculum all of which provide our students with hands-on, student-centered learning experiences.
About Roxana Gonzalez: Ms. Gonzalez is the 7th grade social studies teacher at Jorge Prieto. She graduated from UCLA with a Political Science Degree and holds a masters in Teaching with a Bilingual Endorsement from Dominican University. This is her fourth year teaching, and she plans to have a lifelong career in education. She believes that knowledge is power and through teaching, she empowers students to speak out against injustices. On March 25th, Ms. Gonzalez and her colleagues are leading by example.
About Daniel Gray: Mr. Gray is an 18 year veteran teacher with Chicago Public Schools and appreciates the privilege to teach and help educate children at Jorge Prieto Academy. He holds Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and is a graduate of Teachers for Chicago. Mr. Gray leads a student centered classroom where students engage with culturally relevant and rigorous text. Mr. Gray encourages students to think critically and find a passion for learning.
